Dr. Neena Chopra, the brain behind Just Herbs’ formulations, explains how serums can do what creams cannot
Facial skin needs to be treated with utmost care as it is delicate and sensitive. Using the wrong cosmetic or cream might lead to allergic reactions and skin damage. This is where serums come in.
What is a serum? It is a light weight non-greasy product that contains active ingredients in a very fluid formula to allow for deep action and fast absorption. A serum is usually applied on the skin after cleansing but before moisturizing.
Loaded with goodness
A serum’s purpose is to infuse powerful ingredients directly into the skin in the quickest way possible. It also contains brightening and nourishing properties that help in reducing pigmentation, fine lines and dark circles. Additionally, it acts as an anti-ageing product that enhances the efficacy of your moisturizer and night cream.
A serum is able to do this because it is made up of molecules that are smaller than those of a cream. As a result, it is able to penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients.
Creams, unlike serums, usually rely on ingredient delivery mechanisms that are not able to penetrate very deep into the skin. Serums, on the other hand, are supposed to do what creams cannot.
However, most serums fall short of this claim as they may contain silicones. While these provide a smoothing effect on the skin, all they do is prime your skin without allowing the inner layers to absorb the ingredients as they are supposed to.
Owing to the ‘barrier effect’ caused by the silicone, they also trap any sebum, dirt and bacteria that may already be on the skin, thus potentially leading to a breakout or allergic reactions.
This is why one must look for serums that are blends of natural oils with light sensory qualities and fast absorbency. This will help active ingredients penetrate deeply into the skin. A good serum isn’t sticky or greasy on the skin.It has the finest concentration compared to other products of the same range and allows layering of another product on top.
As a result of these unique qualities, serums are suited for all skin types.
Even if you are using a medicated product for acne, you can use a serum either before or after the pimple treatment. You can use serums all year round to hydrate your face for healthy skin.
A serum should be used each time one wants a proficient skin care treatment. You can vary the serum depending on the seasons or specific needs – like targeting dry skin in the winter and boosting glowing skin in the summer.
For all ages
You can never be too young to use a facial serum.
Add it to your skincare regime to give your skin that flawless feel. We have clients aged 25 and above using our serum.
A few drops is all you need as the concentration of the active ingredients is high enough to deliver the benefits.
While serums are a wholesome product, it is not moisturizing enough to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day, especially if you have dry skin.
Also, a serum cannot be replaced with your sun protection gel or cream. The best time to use the serum would be at bedtime followed by your night cream or gel. This will allow the serum to act on your skin while it rests.
However, using serums during the day and layering it up with a good quality broad spectrum sunscreen is also recommended in some cases. While serums do tend to be on the pricier side, do remember the numerous benefits that they offer. Nourish your skin and watch it glow.
